New Apple Software iOS 4 Now Available
The new software update for Apple's iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices is out today. Dubbed iOS 4, the free update brings over 100 new features to its fleet of devices, the company announced.
Chief among these is multitasking , a feature that allows multiple apps to run simultaneously, and which has available on competitors' mobile device operating systems such as Android and BlackBerry for some time.
This multitasking will not work across all Apple devices, with the first generation versions of the iPhone and iPod Touch being left out, for example. Also, to take advantage of multitasking, the apps must have been developed for use with iOS 4.
Speaking of apps, folders for sorting them are now available, as well as iBooks , a digital reader and bookstore.
The latest software was released just before the next-generation iPhone 4 is scheduled to go on sale this Thursday.
The update can be downloaded using the newest version of iTunes. Since demand is expected to be high, manual downloads of iOS 4 are also available at MacRumors and elsewhere. A manual download can take from 40 minutes to an hour.
