Facebook Scammers Entice with Charlie Sheen 'Sex Tape'
It didn't take long for Facebook scammers to hitch a ride on the Charlie Sheen publicity wave.
A scam spreading around Facebook is capitalizing on the public's ravenous appetite for all things Sheen by promising to show a sex tape featuring the unhinged Two and a Half Men actor, the security firm Sophos reported.
The enticing message is appearing on wall posts with the title, Charlie Sheen is one Sick Puppy, ADUTLS ONLY GUYS!! This is his first attempt at Homemade Sex Action.
The link embedded in the post directs users to a survey page that generates cash for the scammers, and then to a spoof YouTube video featuring quotes from Sheen's recent rants.
The shame spotlight recently shone on singer Christina Aguilera, who was arrested March 1 for public intoxication, and Facebook scammers were right there to cash in.
Sophos reported that corrupted links claim to have video of Aguilera's arrest. Similar to the Sheen scam, this one takes eager viewers to a fake video, and automatically clicks the Like button, enabling the message to spread virally.
A third scam seen traveling through Facebook uses a hugely popular YouTube clip of a man who photographed himself every day for eight years.
The real video, called Living My Life Faster 8 years of JK's Daily Photo Project, has attracted tons of online attention, with nearly three million viewers. Like countless other video scams, this one takes users to a page that attempts to trick them into completing a survey.
To steer clear of these hassles and stay safe, security experts advise Facebook users to avoid clicking on links. If you do end up getting fooled, it's important to remove the application from your profile.
