In a bid to stay relevant in the increasingly competitive ebook-reader market, Amazon.com has introduced video and audio clips for iPhones, iPads, and iPods in its latest update of the Kindle app for these devices. The clips will accompany both instructive texts like cookbooks, as well as add mood to fictions pieces, Amazon said.
So far, Amazon has only made 13 books available with video and sound, five of which are “Rick Steves’” travel guides. Those travel guides feature videos of the locales covered in the book, providing a virtual walk-through for users planning trips to London, Venice, Paris, Florence and Rome.
Amazon is also offering Rose's Heavenly Cakes (Wiley, 2010) with video instructions for baking, and Bird Songs: 250 North American Birds in Song (Chronicle, 2010) with audio of different bird calls.
