Yankees Strike Out With Huge Data Breach
Leaking the personal information of your devoted season ticket holders is no way to thank your fans for their continued support.
But that's exactly what happened on Monday (April 25), when a New York Yankees employee accidentally emailed an Excel spreadsheet containing the names, addresses, phone numbers, fax numbers and email addresses of 21,466 season ticket holders, the sports website Deadspin reported.
The confidential document, which also included fans' seat numbers, was attached to a newsletter sent periodically to approximately 2,000 clients.
The Yankees apologized for the data breach in an April 27 letter on its website, informing those affected that the spreadsheet did not include any birth dates, Social Security numbers or financial data.
The Yankees are ahead in the standings for now, but it's hard to imagine the season ticket holders affected by this security error are as pleased with the team's office staff as they are with their beloved Bronx bombers.
