New E-Paper Capable of Displaying Video
One of the biggest problems with digital paper, like that seen in the Amazon Kindle and other e-readers, is that it can't display anything more than static images. A new kind of e-paper technology is set to change that.
While e-paper has ultra-low battery usage and great visibility in ambient light, it needs the ability to show moving pictures in order to be truly useful for more than reading e-books . A new kind of e-paper from Nemoptic is capable of displaying videos .
The e-paper has a 30-millisecond refresh rate, which isn't extremely fast, but fast enough to do full video. What's more, the resolution is high enough to "render complex Chinese characters," although the company doesn't give specific specs.
Another important benefit is the ability to include touchscreen capability, which is a basic requirement for many devices now. But even more importantly, this technology has the potential to be cheaper than many other e-paper technologies, which will be a key point for device manufacturers.
Nempotic and other e-paper manufacturers aren't just interested in making e-paper for consumer devices . The technology also has potential for everything from monitors to outdoor signs.
