Amazon announced on Wednesday a sleek third-generation Kindle e-book reader that is 21 percent smaller and 15 percent lighter than its previous version.
The new Kindle – which comes in white or graphic colors -- has a new electronic-ink screen that promises 50 percent better contrast and turns pages 20 percent faster than its previous model. It also has up to one month of battery life.
The news comes on the heels of Amazon lowering the price of the Kindle from $259 to $189.
The company also announced on Wednesday an even cheaper, wireless-only Kindle that is priced at $139. The move is part of the company’s effort to extend the device’s mass-market appeal .
“At this price point, [we believe] many people are going to buy multiple units for the home and family,” said Chief Executive Jeff Bezos in a statement.
The devices, which are now available for preorder, will begin shipping Aug 27.
