PlayStation Network to Offer HD Movies from 6 Major Studios
PlayStation 3 owners rejoiced last year when Sony announced a deal with Netflix to stream movies over the console. Now Sony has made another announcement that might make that Netflix subscription obsolete.
Sony has announced its popular game console will have access to high-definition versions of movies from all six major studios, including 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal Pictures, and Warner Bros.
"Securing high definition content from these studios is another significant milestone further validating PlayStation Network as a complete entertainment network in the home," Peter Dille, senior vice president, marketing and PlayStation Network, Sony Computer Entertainment America, said in a statement.
Sony will stream movies from the studios via the PlayStation Network, an online community hub that PS3 owners connect to with their console.
The movies, which include recent releases such as "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian," "Fantastic Mr. Fox," "Star Trek," "District 9," "Inglourious Basterds" and "The Hangover," will be available for purchase or rental to PlayStation Network subscribers.
Sony didn't give a specific date for launch but did say 19 HD movies would be available when it does. Only US residents will be able to download movies at first. Sony has plans to expand the service to France, Germany and Spain shortly thereafter.
